How much retail floor space do we have in the World?

For a project we are currently working on we are looking to establish the total, global retail floor space - in GLA ft or metre sq. would be fine.

But it is not easy to find any figures - why is that?

Hopefully I can report back in due course with some links and numbers - all help & pointers are welcome.
